Working with Clipping Masks

In this lesson we'll explore:

  • How to create clipping masks.

  • How to access clipped objects.

  • How to trim clipped objects.

Take Action:

  1. Download the practice worksheet (same as the one from the previous lesson).

  2. Select the flower and make several copies of it around the artboard by simply holding down Alt as your drag it around and click (this will drop copies of it). Make sure some of the petals fall off the edges of the pink background.

  3. Make a copy of the pink background in front (Ctrl + C then Ctrl + F). Then, right click and bring it to the front.

  4. Select everything on your artboard and press Ctrl 7 to make a clipping mask. (For this to work, the square must be on top.)

  5. Double click to go into isolation mode to get access to editing the flowers that fall off the edges of the background.

  6. While it's still selected, go to pathfinder > click 'trim' to trim all of the edges. Note - you'll only do this if you're sure you won't need access to those overlying parts anymore.

  7. Next, drag and drop a photo from you computer into your document.

  8. Draw a circle and make sure it's brought to the front.

  9. Select them both and make a clipping mask (Ctrl + 7).

Great Job! Keep Going!
