Creating Custom Color Palettes

In this lesson we'll explore:

  • How to create custom color palettes

  • How to use the eyedropper tool (I)

  • How to add custom color palettes to the swatches panel

  • How to save custom color palettes for future use

  • How to make them "persistent"

In the downloads, you'll find the swatches I made in the video. Download them, add them to your swatches panel and feel free to use them as you wish!

Take Action:

  1. Drag and drop a photo from your computer into a new document.

  2. Drag all of the existing colors in your swatches panel to the trashcan (you may want to keep black and white).

  3. Draw 8-18 squares on your document.

  4. Select the eyedropper tool (I) and begin selecting colors from your photograph.

  5. To quickly select the next box to fill, press and hold down command to gain access to the last selection tool you were using. *I love this shortcut!

  6. Once you have colors ready, select them all and click the New Color Group icon at the bottom of the swatches panel.

  7. Name the group (optional).

  8. Save the palette. Open a new document, locate your saved palette and add it to the swatches panel.

  9. Make the palette persistent and open a new doc to confirm it shows up.

Great Job! Keep Going!
